Why Is My Baby Throwing Up? – Being Parents

Why is my baby throwing up?

It is common for babies to vomit in their first few weeks of life. This is a normal condition as they get used to receiving food in a different way. In addition, their bodies are in full development. When wondering why your baby is vomiting, you should know that there are several causes that may be causing the vomiting.

Below, you will find some of the most common causes of vomiting in babies. They range from indigestion, to a period of prolonged crying, coughing or dizziness  while traveling by car.

Why is my baby throwing up? The most frequent causes

Problems in the diet

During the first months of life, vomiting is usually related to eating problems. First, the excess food causes vomiting. Then another less common factor is allergy. Babies may not tolerate the proteins in breast milk or formula.

Viral or bacterial infections

Congestion and respiratory illnesses cause vomiting in many cases, especially with a cough. The mucus accumulated during colds can also clog the windpipe. It will then cause the vomiting reflex. This way, many babies push the mucus out of their body.

New born crying

Excessive crying

Prolonged crying is also a common cause  of the vomiting reflex  When this happens and the baby has no other symptoms, there is no need to worry.

Dizziness when traveling by car

If your daily routine includes long car trips,  the cause of vomiting may be related to vehicle movement. Indeed, there is no connection between what the baby sees and the way his body swings.

Toxic substances

Another cause of vomiting in babies is the ingestion of a toxic substance. The most common are drugs, plants or cosmetics. In addition, certain foods or untreated water can cause poisoning in the baby’s body.

Intestinal obstructions

Sudden and persistent vomiting can be a sign of many illnesses. Among them is intestinal obstruction. Your baby may be vomiting a lot, not eating well, and have other symptoms. It will therefore be necessary that you go to your trusted pediatrician.

Usually, vomiting attacks last for a short time. And, if that’s okay, they don’t require any treatment. You just need to make sure the baby is well hydrated. If the baby looks healthy and her weight is within the acceptable range, then don’t worry.

When should I take her to the doctor?

Sometimes vomiting is a sign of more serious illness. You should definitely go to the doctor when you notice any of the following additional signs:

  • Signs of dehydration. That is, dry mouth, no tears and less urine than the baby normally produces.
  • Fever.
  • Lack of appetite.
  • Vomiting that persists for more than 12 hours or is very profuse.
  • An abnormal rash.
  • Drowsiness or irritability.
  • The inflamed abdomen.
  • Abnormal substances (blood or bile, which makes vomit green).

You must help the baby to expel the gases.

What to do when my baby vomits?

  • Keep him hydrated. With vomit, the fluids that the baby needs leave the body. That is why you should replace them so that it does not get dehydrated. Also, avoid giving them artificial juices or carbonated drinks. Consult the pediatrician if he requires oral rehydration solution.
  • Take care of his diet. If the baby is already eating solid foods, avoid giving him irritating or sweet foods. Start by reintroducing your diet with fluids, grains and other easily digestible foods.
  • Get him to rest. Sleep is one of the best remedies for calming the baby. During the nap, the baby’s intestines empty. And it automatically reduces vomiting.  You should always be dependent on him to help him if he vomits while sleeping.

Although vomiting puts the mother or mother on an alert, it’s usually not something you need to worry about. Take the necessary steps to get your baby’s body back to normal and see a doctor  when you notice that the symptoms are not improving or your baby is not behaving as usual.
