Why Do Children Watch The Same Movie Over And Over Again? – Being Parents

Why do kids watch the same movie over and over again?

There are two reasons why children watch the same movie over and over again. The first is about the learning process, while the second is about celebrating what they have learned. And who doesn’t like to repeat the goal that made their team a winning team several times?

Children learn through a system of role models. So as they repeat them, knowledge and understanding becomes fixed in their head. This is why they instinctively seek to repeat the action or activity. Indeed, each time they discover something new.

In adults, a model system could have the same effect. Only, as adults, knowledge comes to us faster because the brain has more tools and information. However,  by taking a test with the repetition of a film, the adult will discover new details in each review he does.

Memory: the reason kids watch the same movie over and over again

Learning through repetition is one of the oldest techniques in education. It is not in vain that teachers repeat the multiplication table over and over again until students have finished memorizing it.

Even songs are composed for children to learn numbers or the alphabet.

In young children, this pattern can also be observed  during play time.  To fix in his memory that the green mark crosses the green hole, the child will repeat the action several times. And even after he is successful, it is good that he continues to repeat the pattern continuously.

In the case of films,  through repetition, children memorize the characters and understand the plot. Each time they watch the same movie, they will be able to understand a little more about the story. So, it will bring them new emotions that they would not have had the first time.

Regulating the content of television programs is part of providing a good education.

Repetition is also a sign of acceptance. When children discover new things in the activities they repeat, they will want to celebrate it more often. In their brain, the way to place the pieces of a puzzle or to solve a riddle remains fixed. And for this reason, they will want to test themselves again.

When it comes to movies, there are some details that they already know will satisfy them. Of course, for adults it is predictable. However, in the case of children,  knowing what is going to happen connects them to the emotion.  In addition, it also gives them personal security.

For this reason, the movie or story told over and over will never lose its interest. Remembering sentences, dialogues or reactions is a very funny experience.  Indeed, it is almost magical, as they are able to predict “the future or the fate” of the protagonist.

My favorite part is coming!

Another reason kids watch the same movie over and over again is the emotion they remember the first time around. They may not be very aware of it. But just  by watching their reactions, you can see when a movie makes them happy. And this experience is also fixed in memory.

Some kids cover their eyes before the bad guy shows up or start smiling before the fun part. This happens because  the scene is  already  familiar to them and connects them to the feelings produced.

The same thing happens with adults. The repetition of songs, movies or stories in the case of adults is more associated with emotions.  Also, how the song or movie makes us feel and what it reminds us of.

Stimulate understanding

One way for parents to participate in this learning process is to share the moment with their children. Whether it’s watching the movie and enjoying the little ones’ reactions, or feigning surprise when the kids pretend to announce what’s going to happen.

Another way to stimulate understanding is to ask questions about the film or the story. What do you think will happen now? Why did this character become like this? This technique tests attention and lets the adult know if the child understands the plot.

Some movies can be very confusing or misinterpreted by children. This is why asking questions about the story can even help clarify any doubts the child may have.
