The Brothers Grimm and the making of fairy tales

Jacob Grimm and Wilhelm Grimm were born in 1785 and 1786 respectively. Since then, more than two hundred years have passed, and yet their collections of classical tales are still read hundreds of times by the childish public.

The two brothers are among the collectors of ancient tales, and are also among the best known in history. In their day, all these stories were transmitted and told orally, writing was not yet present as a form of transmission.

The vast majority of the stories collected by the Brothers Grimm are translated into more than a hundred different languages. And that has nothing to do with their adaptations to the big screen that we were talking about at the start.

However, something has changed in these stories. Indeed, the Brothers Grimm used a lot of violence and cruelty in the original stories, often unsuitable for children. This is why, over time and through advocacy, they eventually ditched the original version and created versions that were much more child-friendly.

One of the most famous traditional tales which has as its protagonist a little girl who is distinguished by her red hood. A story with a very important moral to explain to children. Indeed, she reminds us that you shouldn’t trust people you don’t know.

Hansel and Gretel

Hansel and Gretel is another of the stories compiled by the Brothers Grimm in which we can see the “cruelty” of the brother writers. The witch locks the children in a cage after luring them with candy because she wants to eat them.

Snow White is one of the German legends who made the biggest impact around the world. Several adaptations of the story have been created. However, in each of them the main characters are always a nice girl and seven hardworking dwarves. The cruelty and wickedness of the witch is also present in all versions.

This traditional tale is one of the most altered version in history. Yet the classic tale as we know it today is the one created by Charles Perrault. He is another of the great creators of children’s literature.

However, the current version of Sleeping Beauty as we know it also includes elements created by the Brothers Grimm. This is why part of the attribution of this tale is part of the work of the Brothers Grimm.
