Shopping in the first days of containment was chaos ; some people have taken to storing large amounts of food, just in case. But, over time, it has been observed that it is not necessary to do so without any reason, since taking the recommended hygiene measures is enough to limit the risks.

Before going shopping

First of all, it is important that you list your menus over a week so that you only have to go out 2 or 3 days a week, even if you have more free time during the quarantine period. If you can, write down the quantities according to the number of people who live in your house, since it is best if one person goes shopping.

Before going any further, here we wanted to take stock of some basic and essential foods to always have in your cupboards:

  • Dried fruits (at least 3 or 4 different kinds)
  • Fresh, frozen or canned fruit

  • Rice, pasta or any other cereal like millet, quinoa, etc. These are dry foods that can be kept long enough. In addition, they can be cooked in large quantities and used as a base to prepare all types of dishes quickly.
  • Raw or cooked vegetables.
  • Canned or frozen fish: you can also buy it fresh and freeze it when you get home.

    Before you leave your home, don’t forget to pack your own canvas bags or carts. On the one hand, to avoid plastic waste and reduce the impact on the environment.

    On the other hand, in order not to touch the carts and other baskets available in the supermarket, since they can be contaminated, despite the very frequent disinfection operated by the store staff. Wash your hands well before leaving with soap and water.

    Before entering the supermarket, disinfect your hands with hydroalcoholic gel and put on disposable gloves.

However, you can also pay in cash with the top-up and thus reduce the risk of contamination, since the metal is the source where the virus remains the longest.

    On your way home

    Leave your grocery bags on the floor to avoid contact with any surface where you handle food when cooking. Then put your groceries away and wash your hands well, always with soap and water.

    Finally, wash and sanitize the fruits and vegetables that you plan to consume raw with food bleach. Even though the coronavirus is not transmitted through food, on the other hand, it can be the case of other microorganisms.
