10 tips for skin care in adolescence

Adolescence is one of the most crucial developmental stages in terms of changes and the generation of habits. The hormonal changes that take place cause external manifestations that must be taken into account. Many affections are observed on the skin level,  ranging from simple pimples to painful pustules, produced by acne. In this article, we are going to break down some tips for skin care in the teenage years.

Teen Skin Care Tips

During adolescence, androgen levels circulating in the blood increase. Therefore, they lead to the maturation of certain units and structures that make up the skin.

1. Constantly moisturize the skin

Hydration is the key to taking care of the skin. Not just teenagers, but all ages as well. It must be carried out regularly and repeatedly over time.

Creams that contain vitamin A, allantoin, and vitamin E  are effective in fulfilling the skin barrier function without damaging the skin.

2. Avoid touching active lesions

When acne or pimples start to appear, the teenager has a strong urge to touch, squeeze and scratch the area. This action is strongly discouraged because it  can generate a superinfection of the lesion  or lead to an even larger lesion which will remain on the skin in the form of a residual hyperpigmented macule.

3. Use suitable cosmetic products

Cosmetic products that are used during the juvenile phase must not contain oils in their components. They should also be listed as non-comedogenic. In addition,  using makeup that is not suitable for your skin type can trigger acne breakouts,  irritation, or contact dermatitis.

4. Skin care in adolescence: perform a hygiene routine

The objective of maintaining a cosmetic ritual is to beautify the skin, to preserve it in good health and to decrease the risk of premature aging. In just three simple steps, the routine can be very effective if done consistently and regularly. The three important procedures are:

  • Cleaning.
  • Hydration.
  • Protection.

Cleansing is one of the most important steps as it removes all the dead skin cells that have appeared overnight. It is even essential to cleanse the skin before bed to  remove residue, smog or makeup  of the day.

5. Monitor spots and moles with a specialist

Examining skin spots and moles by a dermatologist is one of the most overlooked consultations. However, tumor lesions are caused by brief sun exposure during adolescence, which causes burns with blisters and intense erythema.

6. Apply sunscreen for skin care in adolescence

The main indication for taking care of the skin is  to apply sunscreen every day,  regardless of whether the day is sunny or not.

It is recommended to use sunscreens with a protection index greater than or equal to 50.  And which offer broad spectrum protection against UVB and UVA rays. The application should be done in the morning, before starting daily activities, and then repeated every two hours during the day.

7. Make scrubs

Exfoliations can be carried out through physical (microdermabrasion with diamond tips), chemical ( alpha-hydroxy or beta-hydroxy ) methods , or with creams.

At this stage of life, the skin has already been exposed to harmful agents from the external environment. Monthly peels are therefore a good indication.

8. Avoid homemade skin treatments

Nowadays, the use of homemade masks made with components such as avocado, coconut oil, eggs or honey is booming. This type of treatment is not indicated in adolescence because they can generate unwanted effects or accentuate dermatological problems such as acne or oily skin.

9. Moisturize lips

The lips are one of the most overlooked parts of the face when it comes to skin care. Teenagers, especially young girls, begin to use makeup that usually dries and dehydrates the lips.

There are then lip balms that hydrate very effectively. They contain shea butter, hyaluronic acid or cocoa butter.

10. Skin care in adolescence: avoiding certain methods of hair removal

At this stage of development, there is more hair growth in certain areas of the body. This leads to a choice in the face of different hair removal methods.

The ideal is  to avoid waxes or depilatory creams  because they tend, over time, to generate residual hyperpigmented lesions in the areas of application.

In addition, these methods can cause irritation or minor burns. Nevertheless,  laser hair removal or pulsed light are two safe and effective techniques.

Skin considerations in adolescence

The most important thing is to  generate a care ritual adapted to the needs of the skin. This ritual should include the fundamental steps of cleansing, hydration and protection.

Finally,  an annual check-up by the dermatologist is recommended  to observe spots due to the sun, nevus or lesions on the skin.
